The truth is that Otter Oasis was not built by someone who always got things right. It was not created by someone who followed the perfect path through life. In many ways, it was built because I got so many things wrong. There were times when I was heading in completely the wrong direction. There were years filled with bad decisions, poor choices, and consequences that followed me for a long time. Looking back now, I can clearly see how different my life could have been.

At the same time, every mistake taught me something. Every setback taught me something. Every challenge forced me to learn lessons that I probably would never have learned any other way.

This article is not about asking for sympathy or trying to rewrite history. It is simply the story of who I was, who I became, and why Otter Oasis exists today.

Most people assume projects start with an idea. For me, Otter Oasis started with a childhood full of experiences that I would only fully understand many years later. Long before websites, ecosystems, NFTs, communities, or future holiday park plans, there was simply a young boy trying to figure out where he belonged. Like many children, life changed when my parents separated. At the time I did not fully understand everything that was happening around me. Looking back now, I can see how much it affected me.

School was never a place where I felt comfortable. I struggled with reading, writing, spelling, and many of the things that seemed to come naturally to other children. Back then, very few people understood dyslexia the way they do today.

As a result, I often became the class clown.

The joker.
The troublemaker.
The kid who was always getting into trouble.

What many people did not realise was that underneath all of that behaviour was a child who was struggling and trying to hide it.

Fishing Was The One Constant

While many things changed throughout my childhood, one thing stayed the same. Fishing. Fishing became my escape from the noise of everyday life. It gave me somewhere to think, somewhere to breathe, and somewhere to forget about whatever problems were going on around me.

Some of my happiest memories growing up were spent sitting beside the water. Those moments taught me lessons that would stay with me forever.

Appreciation for nature
Respect for wildlife
Time spent with family
The value of slowing down

At the time, I never imagined those simple fishing trips would eventually help inspire the vision behind Otter Oasis.

Yet looking back now, I can see the connection clearly.

Many of the things that make Otter Oasis special today were already present in my life decades before the project itself existed.

The Wrong Road

As I moved into my teenage years, many of the frustrations I had carried throughout childhood started shaping the decisions I was making. Looking back now, I can see that I was searching for acceptance and somewhere to belong. Like many young people, I wanted to fit in, and unfortunately I started finding that acceptance in the wrong places.

The people I spent time with were often making poor decisions themselves. At first it seemed harmless enough. There was drinking, smoking, skipping school, and spending time with people who appeared exciting and fearless. At that age, it was easy to believe they had life figured out. The reality was very different, but I was too young to see it.

What started as small mistakes slowly became bigger ones.

One poor choice led to another.
One bad habit became a routine.
One routine became a lifestyle.

Before long, I found myself travelling down a road that was taking me further and further away from the future I should have been building.

When Bad Decisions Become Normal

One of the most dangerous things about making poor choices is that eventually they stop feeling wrong. The first time you do something you know you should not do, there is usually a voice in the back of your mind warning you. The problem is that voice gets quieter every time you ignore it.

Over time, drinking became normal.

Drugs became normal.
Crime became normal.
Getting into trouble became normal.

Looking back now, that is probably the scariest part of the whole experience. When you are living inside that environment every day, it no longer feels unusual. It simply becomes your version of reality. At the time, I thought I was having fun. I thought I was enjoying freedom. I thought I was making my own choices. In reality, I was slowly giving away control of my future one decision at a time.

The Price Of The Easy Life

For a while, the lifestyle seemed exciting. There was always something happening, always another story, and always another reason to keep going. The problem was that every shortcut eventually comes with a price.

The more involved I became, the bigger the consequences became.
The more risks I took, the more problems followed.
The more I ignored the warning signs, the harder they became to avoid.

Eventually, the choices I had been making caught up with me. Prison became part of my story. It is not something I am proud of, and it is certainly not something I celebrate. If anything, it was one of many moments that forced me to start looking at my life differently.

For the first time in a long time, I began asking myself some difficult questions.

Where was this road leading?
What would my future look like if nothing changed?
And most importantly, was I finally ready to do something about it?

It happened through frustration, mistakes, setbacks, and eventually reaching a point where I was simply exhausted by the life I was living.

I was tired of the problems, tired of the stress, and tired of constantly dealing with the consequences of decisions that were taking me further away from the future I actually wanted.

Most importantly, I was tired of being the person I had become.

For years, I had blamed other people for many of my problems. I blamed circumstances, bad luck, and the people around me. One positive step created momentum. Slowly, the life I wanted started replacing the life I was trying to leave behind.

Before I could build anything meaningful in the outside world, I first had to rebuild myself. That process took years, but it became one of the most important investments I have ever made.

As the years passed and my life started moving in a better direction, something else began to change as well. My priorities.

The things that once seemed important no longer carried the same weight. The excitement I had spent years chasing slowly lost its appeal. The things I thought would make me happy never seemed to deliver the fulfilment I was looking for. Instead, I found myself appreciating different things.

Family became one of them.

Becoming a father changed the way I looked at life. For the first time, my decisions affected more than just me. There were people depending on me, looking up to me, and learning from the example I set.

It forced me to think differently about responsibility, about the future, and about the type of person I wanted to become. Looking back now, becoming a parent was one of the biggest turning points in my entire life.

Today, I see things very differently.

Success is having people around you who genuinely care about you. Also, Success is spending time with family. Success is being present for the moments that matter and appreciating the simple things that so many people overlook.

A day spent making memories.

Those moments have become far more valuable to me than anything money can buy.

As the years went by, I became a grandfather as well as a father. Watching the next generation grow gives you a completely different perspective on life. You start thinking less about yourself and more about the future. You start asking what kind of world you are helping create and what sort of legacy you want to leave behind.

Will the full vision happen tomorrow? No.
Will it take years of work? Absolutely.
But some dreams are worth building.
Some dreams are worth chasing.

And some dreams stay with you for so long that eventually you have no choice but to try. Whether Otter Oasis takes five years, ten years, or even longer to fully become reality, I will continue moving forward one step at a time.

The person I am today is very different from the person I was years ago. I am still learning. I still make mistakes. I still have difficult days. The difference is that today I have purpose, direction, and a vision that I genuinely believe in. I no longer measure life by the mistakes I made in the past. I measure it by the person I continue trying to become.

Because the journey itself has already taught me more than I ever expected. And who knows? Maybe one day the young boy who found peace beside the water will see that dream become something real.
